How to detect a gas boiler malfunction?

Several signs can indicate a potential breakdown of your gas boiler. Here are the most common:

•           You no longer have heating or hot water: your radiators remain cold, or the domestic hot water production no longer works. This could be due to a thermostat problem, a faulty circulator pump, or a burner ignition fault, for example.

•           Is your appliance making abnormal noises: do you hear bubbling, whistling, or unusual vibrations? These noises often indicate limescale buildup in your heating system.m;

•           Your boiler is indicating an error: you are seeing abnormal signals on its control panel (red light, error code, flashing lights, etc.). These alerts indicate a malfunction detected by the system itself (safety shutdown, faulty probe, combustion fault, etc.);

•           You have pressure problems: in principle, it should be between 1 bar and 1.5 bars. An unsuitable level can come from a leak in your heating circuit, a defective expansion vessel, or a problem with the safety valve.

•           Your boiler is leaking: you notice water leaks under the appliance or moisture around the connections. These leaks usually come from a worn seal or loose fittings, but can also be due to a crack in the heating element, for example.

Our advice: you can adjust the pressure, replace the thermostat batteries, or bleed the radiators yourself, for example. Beyond these checks, we strongly recommend calling a professional to avoid any risks.

Has your boiler reached the end of its lifespan? It might be time to replace it!

How does the troubleshooting of a gas boiler work?

Diagnosis and identification of the fault

First, the plumber/heating engineer will identify the source of the problem. After asking you about the symptoms you’ve observed, they can then proceed to:

•           A visual inspection of the installation: the technician inspects the general condition of your boiler. He looks for any leaks, checks all connections, and analyzes error lights.

•           a check of its parameters: to carry out his diagnosis, the heating engineer checks the water pressure, the set temperature, the gas flow rate,e and the flue gas evacuation system;

•           Functional tests: the technician can test the different components (burner, circulator, thermostat…) to find the defective element.

Repair and replacement of parts

•           Once the diagnosis is made, the technician proceeds to repair or replace the defective parts. The most common components can be replaced on the spot (seals, electrode, etc.).

•           If the components to be replaced are more specific, the heating engineer will provide you with a quote and schedule a second visit.

Safety testing and commissioning

•           After the technician’s visit, they will perform safety tests and ensure your heating system is functioning correctly. Following the visit, they will provide you with a service report: please keep this document for proper maintenance of your boiler.
